Panthers Outlast Camels 3-1 in the Millis Center

 The High Point University Volleyball team defeated Campbell University across four sets in their Big South Conference matchup Thursday evening in the Millis Center, avenging their previous loss to the Camels last season in the semi-finals of the Big South conference tournament.


This win sees the Panthers improve to 13-0 overall on the season and officially clench a bid to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2018.


The Panthers bested the Camels in the first set 25-20, edged them out 25-22 in a tight third set and sent the Fighting Camels home with a 25-20 fourth set win. The Fighting Camels beat the Panthers 25-20 in the second set to tie the score 1-1 and make this matchup seem like it would be a close one, however this would be the only set the Camels would win and it merely helped Campbell avoid the sweep on Thursday evening.


Redshirt sophomore Madison Smith propelled the Panthers forward in this victory, thanks to her crucial offensive presence throughout all four sets. Smith finished with 18.5 points on the evening, adding a notable 16 kills and two service aces. 


Gabrielle Idlebird and Kaley Rammelsberg additionally played a big part in the Panthers’ victory Thursday evening, with both middle blockers earning 11 points on the night. Idlebird was key in defense for the Panthers, with an impressive eight total blocks and four digs. Rammelsberg hit for 45.8% across the four sets, adding 11 kills on 24 attempts, two blocks and two errors.


Lailah Green had a great night for the Fighting Camels, being a big reason why this matchup seemed so close at times. The sophomore outside hitter finished with 16 kills, 13 digs and two total blocks. Sophomore Melody Paige had a night for the Camels as well, adding nine kills with one error and five total blocks. 


Both teams face off again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Millis Center, with the High Point Panthers looking to sweep the series against the Camels on their senior night.
